How to Remove Peg Bottoms from Barbie Accessories

Let's face it folks, little itty items can be a challenge to position, and if you happen to be a tad on the clumsy side ~like me~ well, I'm always knocking things over and off. In an effort to help kids have a better playing experience, Mattel adds holes to a lot of furniture and pegs to the bottom of accessories like glasses and other kitchen and household items. This is a great idea for 3-7 year olds, but could detract from the diorama effect we big kids may be trying to achieve:@)

An example of the pegs:

Note my cake stand, the bottom is wobbly on the counter
because there is a peg but no hole in the counter.
Couldn't tell you how many times it fell over...

This plastic can't be cut off with scissors. I used sturdy wire cutters and simple emory boards. Yep, cheap cardboard nail files. Go in on an angle with the tip of the wire cutters making little snips, and cut away as much as possible. Then place the file on a table and run the prop back and forth until the peg is ground down flush with the bottom of the item.

Now I have a more stable cake stand๐Ÿ˜Ž

I don't do this for everything,
just those items I would like to use as standard or everyday props.
The cover for the cake dish is a recycled plastic egg.
I added the bead to the top as a finishing touch so it looks like a covered cake stand.

Let's make it work and have a happy day๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. Wow, you got a post out of this...LOL. I've been cutting them off with an exacto knife...but it has to be a sharp one..and yes, emery boards are perfect for sanding small spots. When I get my mini grinder set up, I might do that. Years ago, I ground all the 'spurs' on the bottoms of my pottery from the kiln off with a big grinder.
But, I'm all for whatever works! Grins, Sandi
