Sequin Barbie Top from Dollar Store Christmas Ornament-DIY

This fancy sequin Barbie top is one of those rainy day projects I tried just to see if I could make it... It's another deconstructing craft. I started with a star ornament from Dollar Tree and peeled the fabric off of the foam form. From there cut an opening up the back, used a little hot glue and some velcro... Wa-la Barbie's ready for the Christmas party!
What's Ken up to???

Now I'll be honest, the inside is still a bit sticky,
I'd add some tissue paper or thin gauzy fabric to the glued sides if you plan to try this project.
Um, Ken...
We're trying to show the nice people how to make a shirt here...

The ornament I started with:

What I did:
  • Cut the cap off of the top point.
  • Pick which will be the back of the shirt. Very carefully begin cutting the fabric open on the backside, you'll want the whole bottom of the star open, up to the points on the sides. Try to keep the cuts close to the fancy gold trim. We want the gold trim to show on the front of the shirt.
  • Begin to peel the fabric off of the ornament, it is glued on. While this took a little patience, I was done in less than 10 minutes. As you peel it away, you can begin to break or cut the foam to remove it.

  • Once the fabric is free, cut it up the center of the back, opening the back completely. This is where I'd stick the tissue paper or gauzy fabric to the tacky inside...
  • Fold the collar over to the inside, 1/4-1/2" and hot glue the collar down. I started with the top center on the front side of the shirt. Then did each side.
  • Leave yourself about a 1" hole under each side point to slip the doll's arms through, creating sleeves. Hot glue the two sides down to the bottom points, leaving the bottom open.
  • Hot glue a strip of velcro to each side of the back opening.
  • Dress the doll and smile😎
Before and after:

Ah, I see now...
Ken has some mistletoeπŸ˜‰

Make something just for fun and have a happy holiday seasonπŸŽ…
