Rectangular Faux Fur Stole, Wrap or Poncho for Barbie -DIY

Ha, please allow me to start this post with a disclaimer: It didn't dawn on me until after I started taking pictures that the fur should actually point downward. The piece I had ran more left to right, than up and down. But, I think you still get the idea:@)

Barbie says every girl likes to get dressed up for fancy parties, especially at the holidays, it makes her feel extra special! Ma gave me a remnant of black faux fur and I decided to turn it into an elegant stole or wrap for Barbie. I cut a rectangle so it would wrap around her shoulders and rounded the bottom. Then I decided to sew a fancy cameo button onto the front center to secure it. One of the things I really love about this project is, the fabric edges don't fray. Super simple, cut, wrap, play!
Doesn't she look rather Audrey Hepburn-ish???
Our model is one of the BMR 1959 dolls.
Between clearance pricing, my son's Prime, and cash back rewards, she cost me $3.77!
Merry Christmas to me๐Ÿ˜‰

The fashion ideas are endless, especially if you Google fur stole's and see some of the fun designs. I wanted to keep mine as simple as possible so girls could make one for themselves. Since this takes such a small amount of fabric per stole it's another fun birthday party or sleepover craft for a group. They can glue any color ribbon around the top to tie it over Barbie's shoulders or add a pretty button to secure it in front.

What I did:
  1. Cut a 4" by 6" rectangle. Tip for cutting faux fur from the comments below: Cut the back side of the fabric with a razor blade or craft knife, it doesn't cut the fur. And yes, the cut edges will shed a bit and be messy... I suggest giving it a good shake outside.
  2. Optional: Round the two bottom corners of the fabric. I did do this.
  3. You can drape it over her shoulders and hot glue some ribbon to the inside of the top for tying. Or sew a pretty button to the top of one side. If you sew a button, keep your stitches ~loose~ so the button will lay flat when buttoned.
  4. Either sew ribbon loop to other side, or cut a hole in fabric so stole can be secured. I cut a hole.
  5. Drape over doll's shoulders and pretend she's a movie star๐Ÿ˜Ž

Another cute idea, depending upon how wide the fabric is (mine was only 4"), you could cut a square, add a hole in the center and call it a small poncho too. More poncho ideas can be found here.

Barbie says...
Dhaling, be a dear and escort me to the champagne and hor d'oeuvres please.

✂Make something just for fun and have a happy day!

  1. This is so cute! A less messy way to cut the fur is with a razor blade, or craft knife. That way you can cut just the fabric back, & not the hairs
