Easy DIY Barbie Throw Pillows

While looking back at some of my posts, it became apparent that my Barbies needed some decorative throw pillows:) I'll share three easy ideas here, these first two should be able to be whipped up in less than 30 minutes. The green pillow uses the selvage edges from the fabric as fringe, super cute! And the round pillow is a fabric yo-yo that I stuffed with a little batting, then added a pretty button embellishment to the gathered hole in the center.

My third pillow is very modern and the easiest of all...
One 2" fluffy pom-pom.
The wall art is a 4x6" canvas (set of three for $1), covered in Glitterific acrylic paint.
Planter of succulents is from a Mattel playset.

The square pillow:
Strip of fabric 2 1/2" x 5" long.
Selvage edges, 5" long for each side (can use two sets of 2 1/2" long). Make sure you cut about 1/4" of fabric next to the fringe so you can sew it.
Fold fabric in half, right sides together, making a 2 1/2" square pillow.
Tuck the fringe edges towards the center of each side of the pillow, matching the 1/4" edge to the cut sides of the pillow.
Sew each fringed side of the pillow using 1/4" seam allowance. Leave the bottom open.
Turn inside out.
Gently fluff out your fringe.
Stuff pillow-I used a 4" strip of felt, just wide enough to slip inside the pillow. Fold the felt in half lengthwise, then fold in half again.
Stuff inside pillow casing.
Close bottom edge of pillow. You can tuck the edges in and sew it. I used Liquid Stitch and just glued it closed.

The round pillow:
I have a complete step-by-step picture tutorial showing how to make a yo-yo HERE.
Add some stuffing to the inside of the yo-yo. Stuffing can be batting or a cotton ball.
I sewed a button onto the center to finish the pillow.

Barbie says every girl likes throw pillows😉

  1. Cute! I love the little puff pillow, that is how I learned to sew, making "yo-yos" as we called them. I like the button trim, might try some flower pillows for my Granny cottage, next project after the hotel! Thanks, Lynn
